The Importance of a Plant's Root System

My wife, Susannah pointed out this Sycamore tree’s root system after a family bike ride on one of Folsom’s amazing trails this past weekend and I was fascinated by it.

As we know, the main function of roots of plants help transport water and nutrients. The other function that is evident from this photograph is to provide support for the plant.

Often times when we are installing a landscape project with mature trees, we encounter tree roots while digging. A good rule of thumb is to not disturb a tree within its canopy. This can potentially damage the root system and eventually kill the tree. There are some cases that you can dig and plant within the canopy but you must be very careful to not disrupt or cut any roots.

One of the easiest ways to help a plant survive after being planted is to ensure that its root ball is completely covered with soil. Drying out roots is the quickest way to kill a plant so make sure you always cover the roots with soil and then a top dressing of mulch to help keep in moisture.
