Did you know your own garden can improve your health?

Recent studies have determined that being in a natural or naturally-designed environment can help with stress relief as well as the reduction of blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.

The human race has lived in the natural environment for the majority of our existence and because of that, scientists believe that being relaxed when we are in nature is ingrained in us.

A Japanese study of ‘Forest Bathing’ (Shinrin-yoku - a term created by Tomohide Akiyama, director of Japan’s forestry agency) showed how great the health benefits are to submerse yourself in forests - become present to the forest surroundings and observe it’s elements such as watching tree leaves blowing in the wind. Besides the benefits mentioned above, there are many others, including boosting your immune system with an increase in cells that are scientifically proven to fight tumors and infections. You can read the full study here: https://environhealthprevmed.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1007/s12199-009-0086-9

But you don’t need a forest to reap these health benefits, you can use your own garden to better your health. Many other studies have supported these findings with things as simple as observing trees through your home’s windows. Even many hospitals and rehabilitation facilities are using this research to created therapy gardens for patience, to help their recoveries.

With all of this knowledge, it makes sense for your health to transform your exterior surroundings into a relaxing environment. No matter how much space you have in your landscape, you owe it to yourself to have a landscape that will help you relax more and in turn improve your health.
